    AQUATIC THERAPY
Our Waverly Health Center outpatient clinic location features a therapeutic pool allowing for aquatic rehabilitation. Aquatic therapy consists of an exercise/stretching program completed in the water to utilize the physical properties of the water to assist in patient exercise performance and healing. . While submerged in the water, buoyancy assists in supporting the weight of the patient. Patient immersion to shoulder level dissipates 80% of the bodies effective gravity thus reducing compressive forces on the joints. By decreasing joint stress it is easier and less painful to perform exercise. This warm water environment is ideal for patients with chronic pain, decreased range of motion due to arthritic joint changes or debility due to stroke, head injury or spinal cord injury as well as for overweight patients. The water’s buoyancy makes it possible to achieve a position of comfort often not attainable on land. The water acts as a support for the spine or patient extremity weakened by disease, surgery, immobilization or injury.
The water provides a safe environment to address impairments with balance and coordination. Aquatic therapy utilizes hydrostatic pressure to improve joint position awareness. This results in improved proprioception in patients suffering from joint sprains, torn ligaments and neurologic disorders.

For patients requiring balance rehab the improved joint proprioception and increased reaction time allowed by the resistance of the water allow for more aggressive intervention leading to a quicker and more complete recovery.
