| TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT (TMJ) DYSFUNCTION | |

Physical therapy can be an effective treatment option for patients with Tempromandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ).
Patients with TMJ pain/problems often complain of one or more of the following:
- Jaw and facial pain/tension
- Jaw cracking/popping
- Neck tension
- Ear pain
- Headaches
- Toothaches
- Problems chewing, swallowing, opening your mouth, or yawning
- Difficulty turning your head
- Problems with sitting activities such as working at the computer or reading
Your Physical Therapy treatment may include:
Modalities:
Ultrasound, iontophoresis and cold therapy are used to reduce inflammation, swelling and pain
Manual therapy and strengthening exercises:
Manual therapy and strengthening exercises to the cervical spine may be done to improve posture.
Manual therapy to the TMJ may be done to improve joint movement and range of motion.
Correcting poor habits:
Many patients with TMJ problems tend to clinch their teeth. This and other poor habits will be addressed.
